Nanjing Central Europe's 100-year-old freight yard has become a new starting point for Europe
Nanjing North Railway Station, also known as Pukou Railway Station, was built in 1908 and is the starting point of Jinpu Railway.
Since October 2004, Nanjing North Railway Station no longer undertakes passenger transportation tasks, but the Nanjing North Railway Station freight yard is still operating. This cargo yard on the north bank of the Yangtze River has a dock on one side and a railway station on the other. It is the most important water and land transport transfer station in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. In the last two or three decades, due to the development of road transport, the freight yard of Nanjing North Station was once sluggish. But the China-European class is running, so that it is busy again.
In 2013, the Nanjing Freight Center was established, and the Nanjing North Station freight yard “mainly attacked” container transportation. It coincides with the “One Belt, One Road” initiative, which has ushered in a great development of “Nanjing”.
In August 2014, Nanjing Central Asia was opened for business; in June 2016, Nanjing Central Europe was put into trial operation. At present, Nanjing Central Europe and Central Asia class trains are all based on the Nanjing North Railway Station freight yard. In April 2017, the Nanjing China-Europe team was in normal operation, and the number of trains in China and Europe increased gradually, and the volume of goods sent by the freight yards also increased significantly.
According to the data provided by the Nanjing Freight Center, the Nanjing North Station freight yard delivered 357,900 tons of goods in 2018, nearly double the number in 2015. In 2018, Nanjing Central Europe and Central Asia sent a total of 130 rows of 6034 vehicles, of which the Central European class was increased by 18 columns and 850 cars in the previous year.
At present, Jiangsu, Jiangsu, Lianyungang, Xuzhou and other four cities have already started the Central European train. The number of return cargoes in Nanjing Central Europe is still not much. Last year, there were only 11 columns, and the categories were mainly decorative and processed.
“The biggest benefit of ‘Belt and Road’ is the improvement of railway services.” Liu Dongning, marketing manager of Nanjing Cargo Center, told reporters that because of the different gauges, the CEIBS class should be replaced. After the construction of the “Belt and Road” project, the replacement is more convenient and faster. Taking the North Line as an example, entering Russia from Manchuria, it took 3 days to change a train in the past, and now it takes only 18 hours. Exiting from the Alashan Port has been difficult to guarantee in the past. Now it is standardized and basically can exit the country within the specified time.
